Camp Length:
All camps are five days - Monday through Friday

Time:
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - - - No Before-Camp or After-Camp Child Care Available

Cost Per Week:

$185.00 Non-RMCS Students $165.00 RMCS Students

Snacks & Lunch:
Brought from home. The RMCS “No Sugar Policy” remains in effect.

NOTES

        All registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up early to reserve a spot!

        Once a camp has met its minimum of eight registrations, an “All About Camp” information sheet from the teachers will be provided to parents.

        “Rising” refers to the grade a child will enter in September 2008.

Move, Sing and Feel - Music and Movement
Rising 1st through 4th Graders

Teacher: Hannah Stampe, RMCS After School Assistant

Description: Bring your creativity and energy this week! Campers will learn different songs and dances each day—and create their own! Games and activities will focus on rhythm, music and movement. Campers will also handcraft an instrument to bring home and share.


Budding Musicians Camp
Rising 5th through 8th Graders

Teacher: Dave Desmelik

Description: Campers will explore various genres of music, including rock and bluegrass. They will discuss music theory, basic cords and scales. They will explore the guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and percussion instruments. Campers will make their own shakers and are encouraged to bring instruments from home.

Drama Camp “Let’s Pretend”
Rising 1st through 3rd Graders

Teacher: Doreen Dvorscak, RMCS Kindergarten Teacher

Description: Campers will create imaginary worlds of wonder! Each day will have a different theme (Animals, Under the Sea, Ancient Egypt, Space Aliens, etc.). Campers will explore creative movement, vocal and sensory activities, theatre games and dramatization. They will create masks, costumes and props, as well as characters, situations and dialogue. Campers will act out stories, books, poems and songs. The power of pretend will take campers anywhere they want to go!


Creating Problem Picture Books
Rising 4th through 8th Graders

Teacher: Susan Swanson, RMCS Omega Teacher

Description: Using 6 traits, campers will create picture books that tell a Math story. They will work on math skills appropriate to their ability/age.

Cooking & Art Camp- Session One
Rising 1st through 3rd Graders

Teacher: Sandra McCassim, RMCS 2nd Grade Teacher

Description: Campers will be making pizza, whipping up fruit smoothies, and baking bread, muffins, scones and homemade pizza. While the goodies are in the oven, they’ll be doing various craft activities, including making paper, picture frames and a whole lot more. Pure fun!


Music, Music, Music and Painting
Rising 3rd through 5th Graders

Teacher: Julie Ludvigsen, RMCS 4th/5th Grade Teacher

Description: The days will be filled with many types of musical skills, including creating rhythms, singing and playing the recorder. Each day will end with a painting inspired by our day’s musical activities. No prior experience with music is necessary; recorders will be provided.


June 30 through July 4


Outdoor Explorers- Session One
Rising 1st through 6th Graders

Teachers: Julie Ludvigsen, RMCS 4th/5th Grade Teacher and Kevin Bose

Description: Students will have fun exploring nature and creating their outdoor classroom. Each session will begin with a bird watching and bird language. Then campers will move outside to work on building projects such as garden beds, Native American structures, a labyrinth, and more. Campers will also learn fun songs, make nature crafts and listen to outdoor/environmental stories.


July 7 through 11


Faerie Camp- Session One
Rising 1st through 3rd Graders

Teachers: Jessica Redford and Doreen Dvorscak, RMCS Kindergarten Teachers

Description: Enjoy a week of faerie exploration! Campers will choose one of the flower faeries for their own – creating a costume, crown and wings to bring their faerie to life for the faerie parade at week’s end. Along the way, they will discover new music, traditional dances, games, stories and poetry. Campers will create faerie dust, faerie houses, flower snacks, dolls, crafts and more. Faerie Camp is fun for both boys and girls and is a special summer tradition at RMCS.


July 14 through 18


Environmental/Vegetarian Camp
Rising 1st and 5th Graders

Teachers: Chad Rohl, Weaverville Elementary 4th Grade Teacher & Shelly Rohl, Director of Blue Heart Sanctuary, a animal sanctuary in Yancey County

Description: This fun-filled week’s hands-on activities will educate children about what they can do to help the local and global community through environmental activism. An introduction to vegetarianism is included. Topics will include recycling, organic gardening, vegetarian cooking, the rainforest and other biodiverse ecosystems – including their own. The Jane Goodall Institute’s “Roots & Shoots” program empowers children to make a difference on a local level and thus, collectively, have a profound impact globally. Campers will discuss what they can do to be part of this amazing movement.


July 21 through 25

BAM! - Balloons and Magic
Rising 3rd through 8th Graders

Teacher: Marcie McGrath, RMCS parent, magician and balloon artist

Description: Each day, campers will learn how to take a basic high-quality long balloon and create incredible balloon art! The basic twists will be taught so that the only thing that will limit campers is their own imaginations! On Friday, a special guest will visit to help celebrate the campers’ accomplishments. Each camper will receive their very own balloon kit, containing a book, pump and balloons.


Cool Water Music & Permaculture
Rising 4th through 8th Graders

Teacher: Gail Ashburn, Musician and Director of the Cool Water Singers

Description: Children will sing, dance, perform puppetry, and learn about permaculture. Students will be work outside on the campus grounds and learn about gardening, natural buildings, and more.
