The Asheville Area
Asheville is a vibrant city nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina. With its unique blend of urban culture, small-town charm and outdoor opportunities, Asheville frequently makes national "Top Ten" lists of places to live.
This progressive city has numerous museums, theaters, a lyric opera, an active arts community, and a surprisingly diverse collection of restaurants and shops. Asheville is also a spiritual center and home to virtually all faiths. The healing arts are well represented with practitioners from a broad spectrum of modalities. There are excellent local colleges and universities, including the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Warren Wilson College and Montreat College.
Perhaps most unique is that all of this culture is just minutes from a back-country adventure. The Blue Ridge mountains provide the perfect terrain for hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and camping. The French Broad River that runs through the city is a favorite for rafting and kayaking, as are the countless mountain streams. Atlantic beaches are only a few hours away.
Asheville is also at the forefront of environmental and social consciousness with active local chapters of many environmental groups and social interest causes and charities. The city has numerous natural foods stores and co-ops, organic farms, a local green builders association, a citywide recycling program, and even biodiesel fueling stations.
